On October 3rd, I received a message from a contact that works at the local Humane Society. They had two young chicks up for adoption and there was very little to go on as far as their history. I picked them up that afternoon. Being so little, they will be kept warm indoors for the winter while they grow. I weighed them the next morning and they were both just over one pound. Upon doing some research, I estimated their age to be about 8 weeks. 24 hours after I picked them up, the dark one developed a cough/sneeze, so on Wednesday, I ran them both to the vet. She got meds for the upper respiratory infection and inflammation. Unfortunately, they needed to be separated to prevent the spread of infection. They were both greatly underweight, but their fecal tests were negative. I am monitoring their weight daily and they are putting on weight now, so they seemed to have turned the corner! We won't be sure on the sex of these babes for another couple months. We gave the privilege of naming them to our generous donors! For each person that contributed to their care, they got to submit a pair of names. After 1 week, we drew the winning combo, which were Cinnamon & Nutmeg!
Now that Nutmeg has been on meds for over a week and her sneezing has subsided, they are back in the same room and will be reunited shortly. They are so incredibly sweet and cuddly!
